Unbrick Soft Bricked Galaxy Tab 7 (P1000)

I recently tried to upgrade my galaxy tab 7, the P1000 model, to ICS. Unfortunately I chose the wrong ROM for my tab. What ended up happening was that I got locked out of CWM. When I tried to throw another version of CWM on, an older version, I ended up getting LOTS of mount errors. The errors were due to the fact that ICS changes the file system, so older version of CWM are unable to mount properly. I read lots of posts about just throwing on other “working” ROMs, but they were all unsuccessful. After two days of searching and trying lots of different ROMs, I finally found the Overcome ROMs. With the overcome ROMs, it comes with everything needed to create a new file system that is readable by their version of CWM. This enabled me to unbrick my tablet. Once the overcome ROM is on, you can throw on any version of 2.3 successfully. The overcome ROM can be found at http://teamovercome.net/p1000/. I’ve followed the steps on the site, but for a toned down version, here are the steps that I used:

  1. Load Odin
  2. Click PIT and select gt-p1000_mr.pit
  3. Click PDA and select GB_Stock_Safe_v5.tar
  4. Click Phone and select JK3 Modem/modem.bin
  5. Hit start

After the ROM has been loaded, you can either throw on your own ROM or continue with the Overcome ROM. I’m currently using Overcome, until ICS comes out, and I actually enjoy it. It’s very clean and it’s quicker than the other ROMs that I was using before.

Samsung Focus Tethering

Just recently got a new samsung phone from Rogers and needed to get tethering up. Searched the web for just the right instructions and came up with these:

  1. install the Samsung driver. You can get it here
  2. open your phone and dial ##634# then press call
  3. dial *#7284# and select “modem, tethered call”
  4. the phone will reboot
  5. plug in the phone and allow the installation of drivers
  6. once the drivers are installed, select “device manager” in windows, choose “modems” and right-click “SAMSUNG Mobile Modem” and select “properties”
  7. under the advanced tab enter the following under “Extra initialization commands”:

    AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”internet.com”

  8. under the “network and sharing center” on the control panel choose “set up a new connection or network”, then “set up a dial-up connection”
  9. the phone number is *99# and the username is wapuser and the password is wap

This worked perfectly and tethering is up and running. I find it not as fast as my old android, but I think that’s a small price to pay for a windows phone 7 that can tether!
